Blackjack Online

Because it’s so easy to play, as easy to beat as any casino game, and the action of drawing cards can be so exciting, blackjack is the most popular game at online and live casinos. Blackjack also has the lowest house edge, or highest return to player rate (RTP), of any table game at casinos in Ontario.

When it comes to Ontario casinos and Ontario gambling sites, the big difference with blackjack is that the cards and chips have been swapped for random number generators and a graphic interface. The random number generator determines the outcome of each hand, and the betting is electronic.

Improving your blackjack odds in Ontario

There’s a lot of luck in blackjack but also skill and strategy. In other words, the decisions you make can affect the outcome of a hand. Follow basic blackjack strategy where you hit, stand, double or split at the right time every time and you can improve your odds and reduce the house edge.

Dealers are bound by the rules, but you’re not. Most of the time, these rules force dealers to stand on 17 or more and draw with anything less, while you have the freedom to decide what you want to do with every single hand. Following this basic strategy will improve your odds of winning.

In basic strategy, there’s a right move every time. If you are dealt two cards without an ace, you’re said to have a hard hand and should:

  • Always hit with 8 or less
  • Double if the dealer is showing 3 through 6, otherwise hit, with 9
  • Double if the dealer is showing 2 through 9, otherwise hit, with 10
  • Double if the dealer is showing 2 through 10, otherwise hit if the dealer has an ace, with 11
  • Hit if the dealer is showing a 2 or 3, stand if the dealer is showing 4 through 6, otherwise hit, with 12
  • Stand if the dealer is showing 2 through 6, otherwise hit, with 13 to 16
  • Always stand with 17 to 21

If you are dealt two cards and one is an an ace, you’re said to have a soft hand and should:

  • Double if the dealer is showing a five 5 or 6, otherwise hit, with soft 13 or 14
  • Double if the dealer is showing 4 through 6, otherwise hit, with soft 15 or 16
  • Double if the dealer is showing 3 through 6, otherwise hit, with soft 17
  • Stand if the dealer is showing 2, 7 or 8, double if the dealer has 3 through 6, otherwise hit, with soft 18
  • Always stand with soft 19 or 20

If you are dealt two cards with the same value, you’re said to have a pair and should:

  • Split aces or 8s
  • Split 2s or 3s if the dealer is showing 2 through 7, otherwise hit
  • Split 4s if the dealer is showing a 5 or 6, otherwise hit
  • Double with 5s if the dealer is showing 2 through 9, otherwise hit
  • Split 6s if the dealer is showing 2 through 6, otherwise hit
  • Split 7s if the dealer is showing 2 through 7, otherwise hit
  • Split 9s if the dealer is showing 2 through 6 and 8 or 9, stand if the dealer is showing 7, 10 or ace
  • Stand with 10s

As you can see, basic strategy involves doubling down when you stand a good chance of winning, always splitting aces and eights, and never splitting 10s and fives.

If you can’t memorize this basic strategy, use a strategy cue card you can download from PlaySmart right here.

Blackjack basics

Start playing blackjack by placing a bet. Two cards are then dealt face up to each player who bets and two to the dealer with one face down. If the dealer doesn’t have Blackjack (21 in two cards) the action is on the players in order.

If one of the players has Blackjack, they will be paid according to the game’s specified payout schedule. Then, each decides in turn whether to double down, split, hit or stand. The object is to get to 21 or closest to it without going over (bust). All face cards have a value of 10. After all players have either stood or gone bust, the dealer reveals the down card and hits or stands according to rules prescribed by each specific blackjack game. Most of the time that means standing on 17 and hitting with anything under. The closest to 21 compared to each live hand wins, after the dealer has stood. Ties push and all live hands are paid if the dealer goes bust.

Blackjack strategy and tips to help you win

Play perfect basic blackjack strategy as outlined in the “Improving your blackjack odds,” section above. There’s a right move every time, and it will improve your odds. Some players also believe there are other strategies that can provide an edge. Most of the time they don’t. Such flawed theories include the following:

  • Positive betting progressions: Here, you increase your bet following a win. Ultimately, this strategy will have you giving back everything you win when you eventually lose.
  • Negative betting progressions: Here, you increase your bet following a loss. Ultimately, you’ll reach the table limit or lose your entire bankroll before this pays off.
  • Due theory: Here, you bet on the fact that you’re due for a win. Since your chances of winning have nothing to do with your recent wins or losses and the cards don’t remember what happened last time, this is a path to big losses. In other words, betting on what happened in the past won’t increase your chances of winning now.
  • Counting cards: Here, you count the 10-value cards previously revealed and increase or decrease your bet based on how many are left in the shoe. Do it obviously enough, and it’ll get you banned from most casinos. Do it online and you’re wasting your time, since the shoe is re-shuffled after every hand via the random number generator.

Online blackjack variants

OLG’s online casino has long been the only legal blackjack option online in Ontario, but that’s about to change. Ontario is opening up the online gaming market to privately run online casinos, which should bring more blackjack options. Of course, the OLG online casino will stay open, as will its six blackjack games, including:

Blackjack with Surrender

A modern online casino experience, Blackjack with Surrender offers the surrender option where you can get half your bet back and end the hand after the deal. The Dealer stands on soft 17. Player busts and dealer busts with 22 are a push. The game has a 98.87% RTP and $0.10 minimum and $100 maximum bets.

Blackjack Blazing 7s
