Casino Rama Resort — history and current owners

Casino Rama opened on July 31, 1996. Since then, it has been one of the most successful casinos in Ontario. It was renovated in 2013, with a multimillion-dollar investment breathing in new life to the facility.

The casino has also been the site of some illegal activity throughout its history. Multiple people were arrested in 2007 (some were casino employees) after the police discovered a $2 million scam involving using cheating techniques in baccarat. And a cyberattack in November 2016 stole customers’ personal and financial data from the resort’s records.

The property is currently co-owned by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and Ontario Lottery and Gaming. However, the operating licence for the casino currently belongs to Gateway Casinos and Entertainment, one of the leading casino operators in Canada.
