The construction of Pickering Casino Resort is nearing its completion, with phase one expected to launch soon. One Toronto Gaming’s casino project should have opened its doors to the public in early 2020, but the launch received several postponements due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Pickering Casino Resort plans to open its facility in two phases. Phase one will include games and dining venues, and phase two promises the addition of an entertainment arena and a hotel. Here’s what to expect.
Pickering Casino Resort — project background
The first announcement of a Vegas-style casino coming to the eastern Greater Toronto Area came in 2019. The casino was to be the result of a partnership between One Toronto Gaming and the Great Canadian Gaming Corp. In August of the same year, GCG announced the casino’s name — Pickering Casino Resort.
The establishment’s location is between Pickering and Ajax, right next to the Annandale golf course and just south of Highway 401. The size of the gambling venue is set to be 330,000 square feet.
Phase one will focus on the gambling floor, consisting of video slots, table games, live dealer terminals and dining facilities such as upscale restaurants, bars and a buffet.
Pickering Casino Resort has prepared a 2,500-seat live entertainment arena for phase two, where guests can experience year-round music shows, live theatre, and other events. This phase will also see the opening of a 275-room luxury hotel.
Casino games at Pickering Casino Resort
Pickering Casino Resort plans to compete with the largest casinos in Ontario. The gambling floor will include over 2,000 slot machines. While we don’t have any information about which slots it will feature exactly, we can expect to see the latest titles and probably more than a few progressives.
Apart from slots, visitors can try their luck at over 100 live table games, including blackjack, roulette, baccarat and craps. The casino will also offer 167 live dealer stadium gambling terminals where the players can try all the same table and card games but without dealers. The casino has not currently expressed any plans for the addition of a dedicated poker room.
When will Pickering Casino Resort open?
The date for the grand opening of Pickering Casino Resort remains in flux. The initial plan was the launching of phase one in April of 2020, but social distancing measures under the pandemic forced that date back.
All we know right now is that phase one will open sometime in 2021. That will probably happen as soon as the government and health officials relax the measures and allow more people to gather in closed spaces. But, unfortunately, this also means that phase two of the resort, which includes the entertainment arena and hotel opening, will likely need to wait until at least next year.
