PROLINE+ Survey: Interest In Betting In Ontario Is On The Rise

The numbers are in, and they look good.

And that’s great news for the Ontario Lottery Gaming Corporation (OLG) and its recently launched digital sportsbook app PROLINE+.

A recent survey conducted by Hill and Knowlton Strategies for PROLINE+ says betting in Ontario is rising.

In total, the inquiry tapped 1000 Ontarians between Aug. 16 – 23 – just before PROLINE+ launched.

PROLINE+ says the legalization of single-game bets and OLG’s social responsibility (i.e., reinvesting back into Ontario) are driving wagers.

“We’re excited to be the first to market, bringing Ontarians what they told us they’ve been looking for,” said David Pridmore, OLG’s chief digital and strategy officer. “A trustworthy, best-in-class platform that complements their sports watching experience.”

PROLINE+ survey’s key results

With the recent legalization of single-event bets, the survey found that almost two-thirds of Ontarians are now more likely to place singles.

The findings are not just in theory either.

As of Sept. 16, PROLINE+ reports 77% of wagers have been singles.

Overall, fun and entertainment (over 50%) is the main reason Ontarians are betting on sports games.

Alongside that is PROLINE+’s commitment to reinvesting 100% of its proceeds back into provincial priorities such as health care.

Conversation fodder (45%) was a close third.

“Since we launched our online sportsbook PROLINE+ in late August, we’ve already processed more than $6 million in bets, and we’re expecting even more interest in the platform as more sports and leagues start new seasons and as our player base continues to scale,” said Pridmore.

Frequency of PROLINE+ bets during COVID-19

Due to the social upheaval caused by COVID-19, betting habits have also changed.

PROLINE+ says more than a quarter of respondents (27%) indicated they wagered more often due to the pandemic. That was in large part to offset not being able to attend live games. Just under 50% of Ontarians wager at least once a month.

Almost 25% do it once per week.

That number could rise in the future as well, with PROLINE+ providing a more stable environment. Poor grey market experiences plagued the betting experience for one-third of frequent bettors previously.

The study defines frequent bettors as those betting once a week or more.

PROLINE+ is available online and features the major North American sports leagues and some major international sports.
