Disclaimer: FanDuel Sportsbook is not currently available in Canada. This review is speculative based on what we know so far and will be updated when FanDuel comes online in Ontario.

With FanDuel Sportsbook in line to launch in Ontario, new customers who sign up at the online book will be able to claim a welcome bonus of a risk-free bet for up to $1,000.

FanDuel does better than most in terms of market depth, especially when it comes to props and futures for major sports. Fans of the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Raptors will find the various player and game props before and during the games.

The comprehensive market coverage bodes well for savvy bettors. Conversely, the platform has an intuitive and easy-to-use design, making it a good option for beginners.

When it comes to innovative features, FanDuel keeps up with the industry trends. It’s a leader in same-game parlays and will let you cash out early on select bets. In addition, FanDuel consistently ranks as one of the top sportsbooks for daily odds boosts. We go over all that and more in our review below.

FanDuel Sportsbook sign-up bonus — the fine print

Once you’ve created an account and made a deposit, place a bet of $10 or more to qualify for the welcome bonus. If that first bet loses, FanDuel will refund the wager in the form of site credits to your account, up to a maximum of $1,000. You’ll then have 14 days to wager with those credits, and any winnings will be yours to do with as you wish.

As familiar as it seems, this isn’t your garden-variety risk-free welcome bonus. One thing to note is that the refund is in site credits instead of a free bet. This means that you can split any bonus you receive into as many wagers as you wish, within reason, rather than potentially being able to place just one free bet.

Additionally, you won’t face any odds restrictions. This means that you can bet on the Raptors as odds-on favourites or on the Blue Jays in a game where the sportsbook has them as the underdog.

When will FanDuel go live in Ontario?

The first wave of commercial online sportsbooks could legally launch in the province at some point in early 2022. FanDuel and other sportsbooks will need approval from iGaming Ontario, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

Several big names in the legal sports betting industry have made their intentions to enter Ontario clear, including FanDuel. Once it arrives, the sportsbook will accept bets from people who are 19 and older and located in the province.

Ongoing FanDuel promotions

FanDuel has a range of promotions for existing customers year-round. You can access the active ones via a dedicated tab in the upper right corner. Here’s what you may come across:

  • Same-game parlay bonuses: Every now and then, FanDuel provides a few incentives for same-game parlay bettors. You might get a $10 bonus for placing a single-game parlay with three or more legs for $20 or more, regardless of its outcome. FanDuel also offers insurance deals on some single-game parlays. Basically, these are safety nets in case your bet loses.
  • Free contests: Join for a chance to win real money. This is easier said than done, as you’ll have to outperform thousands of other entrants with your predictions to win the prize. It’s a long shot, but the free entry means there’s nothing to lose.
  • Introductory odds boosts: Occasionally, FanDuel provides super inflated odds for first-time bettors. For example, you may get +3000 on any NBA or NFL moneyline for games on or around Christmas. FanDuel usually caps your bet at $5, which means that you could win $150 at the most. This is less than you’ll get from the welcome bonus, but you receive any winnings in cash, not site credits. FanDuel tends to run these inflated odds boosts for high-profile events, such as the Super Bowl or the NBA Finals.

Getting started at FanDuel Sportsbook in Ontario

You can get in on the action at FanDuel Ontario by following a few steps. The registration process is identical on both the website and the app:

  • Launch the app or visit the browser-based version of the sportsbook.
  • Click the join button and fill out the application form.
  • Along the way, you’ll need to provide some basic details about your ID and whereabouts, as well as login credentials. Some of the boxes include your name, address, and Social Insurance Number.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions.
  • You’re all set. Go to the cashier and make a deposit to start betting.

FanDuel Sportsbook Ontario app

Unlike some other books, FanDuel doesn’t have a separate domain for the different states/provinces in which it operates. It uses the same layout across the board. This means that Ontario bettors will find links to download the app for iOS and Android at the bottom of the website, under where it says “FanDuel Apps.” Select the sportsbook version that corresponds to your device and install it — that’s all there is to it.

Using the FanDuel Sportsbook app

The FanDuel Ontario app and website are spot-on in terms of feel and usability. We ran a few tests, and both versions passed easily. They didn’t freeze, crash or lag throughout, and the loading speed was consistently fast.

Generally, the layout is beginner-friendly, with all the relevant options available via the main menus. We found it particularly intuitive that the sportsbook breaks down its futures bets into several subsections — player futures, outright winners, conference/division winners, and so forth.

Best features of the FanDuel Sportsbook app

FanDuel is on point in almost any area and generally does everything to a high level. Here are some of its standout features:

  • Promotional program: FanDuel can rival any sportsbook in Ontario when it comes to bonuses and promotions. Insurance deals and free contests are some of the most popular options, and the welcome bonus is solid, as well.
  • Betting options: FanDuel’s range of prop bets is unmatched. For any given NFL game, the sportsbook offers a variety of player and game props, including kicker props, rushing props, and receiving props. Better still, FanDuel releases these bets earlier than most other books, giving you plenty of time to weigh your picks.
  • Feature-heavy: Alongside the BetMGM app and DraftKings, FanDuel is a trendsetter when it comes to new features, most notably same-game parlays. It’s also one of a select few books to let you cash out early on live bets. Note that this option is not available for every bet.

How could FanDuel improve?

Here are the main areas where FanDuel seemed to lag during our review:

  • Bet slip structure: At the risk of sounding nitpicky, we would argue that the betting slip takes up too much real estate on the website. It’s also a bit inconvenient that the slip remains locked in place when betting via the main site. You can’t minimize it or hide it.
  • No rewards program: It’s a bit shocking that FanDuel doesn’t have a loyalty program in place, with all the promotional giveaways it dishes out to both new and regular customers. In this regard, it’s a bit behind compared to rivals BetMGM and the DraftKings sports app.
  • Interface shortcomings: Although we think that FanDuel has put together a good design, it could still fill a few gaps. Specifically, we find the lack of a search bar a notable misstep.

What kind of sports bets can I place at FanDuel in Ontario?

Like other top-tier books, FanDuel Ontario has a comprehensive betting menu. The lineup includes all the core options:

  • Moneylines: All you have to do is pick the winner of the game. Negative odds indicate the favourite and mean that you stand to win a smaller profit than your original wager. Bets on underdogs are more profitable, provided you win of course.
  • Point spreads: Here, you’re trying to determine the winning margin. A spread bet on the favourite will win if that side wins by more than the line indicates. Conversely, a spread bet on the underdog is correct if that side stays within the spread range — either losing by less than the number or winning by any score.
  • Totals: Often referred to as over/unders, these are bets on a game’s combined score, regardless of which team ends up winning.
  • Props: Side bets that can tackle virtually any aspect of the game, from which team wins the coin flip to a bevy of player props that depend on individual stats for the game.
  • Parlays: Combine several individual picks. Your success depends on every leg (selection) being correct. The more legs you add to the slip, the bigger the potential payout, and the more difficult the parlay is to hit. FanDuel also offers same-game parlays, so it’s possible to create a ticket where you can take the Raptors on the moneyline and Pascal Siakam to score more than 15 points, for example.
  • Teasers: A bettor-friendly variation of parlays, one that allows you to move the lines in your favour at the expense of a smaller potential payout. At FanDuel, you can create homemade teasers as the sportsbook offers a long list of alternate lines on spreads and totals for major sports.
  • Round robins: Similar to a parlay, but arranged in such a way that you can still win some money if you don’t get all of your picks correct.
  • Futures: Long-term wagers that go beyond predicting the next game. Some of the most popular are season-long wagers where you have to pick the eventual winner of the Super Bowl or the World Series. You can also pick individual players to win awards like the MVP. There isn’t a dedicated tab for futures at FanDuel. Instead, these bets appear in sections adjacent to the game menu.
  • Live betting: Click on the “Live Now” tab at FanDuel to bet on games that are taking place. The odds and line will fluctuate throughout the game to reflect swings in momentum, so be ready to bet if you see some numbers that you like.

Can I bet on the Toronto Raptors at FanDuel in Ontario?

There are various ways you can put money down on the 2019 NBA champions at FanDuel. These primarily include basic choices like moneylines, spreads, and totals. Pricing-wise, FanDuel consistently ranks among the top sportsbooks for these options, although we still recommend shopping around.

FanDuel also does a good job with NBA props. You’ll find various player props based on the key categories — points, rebounds, and assists. It also provides alternate lines for player props that can be lower or higher than the standard odds. Or you could bet on how many threes a specific player from the Raptors’ roster will make.

Bets on the race to X points are also available in both live and pregame formats. You’ll also find some rarer options. Here, we recommend wire-to-wire bets, which are super-priced wagers on a team to lead the game at the end of each quarter. There’s also a combination bet where you pick a player to score the first basket along with the winning team.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a sportsbook with a more comprehensive selection of NBA futures than FanDuel. You can bet on the Raptors to win it all or just the Eastern Conference. Alternatively, you can put a few bucks down on player futures with a wager on the next regular season MVP. A few options are missing, like seasonal assist/rebound leaders and scoring champions.

How do I get money on (and off!) FanDuel Online Sportsbook quickly?

To get funds to your FanDuel account, you can use the following sportsbook banking options:

  • Wire transfer
  • Credit/debit card
  • FanDuel Play+ card
  • FanDuel gift card
  • PayPal
  • PayNearMe

The minimum deposit is $10, which coincides with the qualifying bet amount for the welcome bonus. To withdraw funds, you can use PayPal, bank transfer, or a check via mail. The turnaround time on payouts is around 48 hours.

How to contact FanDuel customer support

For assistance at an online sportsbook, it’s always a good idea to start with the FAQ page, especially when it is so well put together, like on FanDuel. If you’re still unable to solve your issue, you should probably contact a live chat agent via the blue icon on the bottom left corner.

Responsible gambling at FanDuel Sportsbook

FanDuel offers various responsible gambling tools, including deposit, time, and betting limits. If none of these methods help you, you might want to consider imposing a self-exclusion ban on your FanDuel account. You can also reach out to one of the organizations on FanDuel’s RG page.

Can I bet at FanDuel in person?

Not at the moment, and it remains unclear when or if FanDuel will establish an in-person sportsbook in Ontario. We will update this if that changes.

Will FanDuel be the best sportsbook in Ontario?

It will likely be a seesaw battle for the top position in the Ontario market between FanDuel, BetMGM, DraftKings, and the Caesars ON app. FanDuel has the upper hand in betting diversity, particularly in the props department. Its welcome bonus has some favourable aspects, though whether you prefer it to those of its rivals may depend more on personal preference. We’d also like to give props to FanDuel’s odds and banking.
