Private sportsbooks vs. Pro-line for NCAAB odds

Pro-line games from OLG have been a legal option for Ontario sports bettors since the 1990s. The main offerings have centred around parlay-style games for which you have to make multiple selections from a betting card.

If you’re right on all of them, you win, but a single wrong selection means that wager is a loser. Recently, the menu of betting options at Pro-line has expanded considerably. Bettors can now wager on individual games and events.

As of this writing, there are no odds available for American college hoops, but we’ll see if that changes in the future. Over at top sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel, you won’t have any trouble finding odds for the games during the season or for futures markets in the offseason.

If you’re interested in betting on NCAAB, you won’t be lacking for options at the top online sportsbooks. There will be odds available for all of the upcoming games and much more. Additional advantages of betting with a legal sportsbook include:

  • Betting on the games you want whenever you want;
  • Several different bet types to choose from;
  • Wagering comfortable amounts.

Basics of college basketball betting

From the opening tilts of the regular season straight through to the Final Four, there are hundreds of different NCAAB games to consider. You can bet on each of them in a number of different ways, explore the most popular prop bets, along with futures, and even live bet as the games play out. Let’s take a closer look at all of the main ways to get in the game with NCAAB betting.

College basketball moneylines, spreads and totals

In advance of the games, the legal online sportsbooks will be more than ready. You’ll find odds for all of the upcoming contests in the Basketball or NCAAB section. The main game listing will feature the lines for the big pregame bets of moneylines, spreads and totals. Here’s what it will look like with American odds.

Gonzaga-125-1.5 (-110)Over 149.5 (-110)
Michigan+105+1.5 (-110)Under 149.5 (-110)

For American odds, negative moneylines or spreads indicate the favoured side, while the numbers are positive for underdogs. Spreads and totals have the number set by oddsmakers along with the odds for the bet. If you’re checking out the numbers with decimal odds, the listing is basically the same, but the values are naturally different.

Gonzaga1.8-1.5 (1.91)Over 149.5 (1.91)
Michigan2.05+1.5 (1.91)Under 149.5 (1.91)

On the moneyline, the number with the lower value is the favoured side. Odds of 1.91 are the equivalent of the standard -110 that you’ll see on spread and total bets listed with American odds. As always, the odds can and will shift in response to betting volume. Here’s a quick run-through on how all three bets work.

  • Moneyline: Just pick which side you think will win the game.
  • Spread: Take the favourite minus the points or the underdog plus the number.
  • Totals: Choose Over or Under on the estimated number of points scored.

Returns on winning bets are based on the odds at the time of bet placement. If we use the industry-standard starting point for spread and totals bets, you’d have to bet $110 at odds of -110 or 1.91 to see a return of $100. A straight $100 wager at those odds would return $90.91. Every little tick on the odds board can add up.

As such, line shopping is highly recommended before you place your bets. This simply means that you are comparing prices at multiple sportsbooks in a quest to find the best odds. It’s worth taking the time to do so on the games you want to bet on. If you don’t shop, you may wind up leaving extra returns on the table.

NCAAB props and futures

For team sports and other major events, prop betting is a big deal. Over in the pro sports, you’ll see dozens of different options available for each contest. On the college side, props are available, but generally less than what you’ll see available with the pros. This is mainly due to the fact that player props for amateur sports aren’t permitted in all markets.

Where they’re allowed, you’ll see some options on the top players, but it pales in comparison to what you’ll find for the average NFL or NBA game. For NCAAB, the main props revolve around the individual teams or the game as a whole. Examples of what you might come across include:

  • Which side will hold the halftime lead: UCLA or Villanova?
  • Total points scored for Purdue: Over/Under 71.5?
  • Will overtime be needed: Yes/No?

The above are examples of two-sided props. They work like moneyline bets in that there will be odds on both sides, often with one side a favourite. There will also be props with multiple selections, in which case there will be odds listed out for all of the available choices. Over in the futures market, expect to see the same.

A futures wager is a long-term bet that’s based on a season-long outcome. If you make the right call, then the returns can be lucrative. However, it’s important to remember that your funds will remain tied up until the bet can be settled. For NCAAB, the top futures markets that attract lots of betting volume include:

  • National Championship
  • Final Four
  • Conference winners
  • Teams to make or miss March Madness
  • Over/Under on team regular-season win totals
  • Player award winners

As a quick example, the odds for the top four contenders for the national title might look like this.

To win NCAAB National ChampionshipAmerican OddsDecimal Odds

If you like Michigan to win and place a $100 bet on them to do so, the profit would be $800 at odds of +800 or 9.0. It’s tough to nail the outright winner, so spreading out the risk with multiple calls makes plenty of sense. You can pick a favourite or two and throw in a mid-range and long-shot pick as well to cover more bases, for example.

How to bet on college basketball in-game

After games tip off, you don’t have to stop wagering. Live betting has grown from a niche offering to a featured option at all of the top legal sportsbooks. These are real-time wagers you can place based on what’s happening on the court. It’s a fast-moving market in which the odds and offerings will vary. Examples include:

  • Updated odds for the top pregame bets;
  • New prop offerings as the contest plays out;
  • Bet on segments of the game like the individual halves.

Mobile apps are the best way to take advantage of all that live betting has to offer. After a game gets underway, just log in and you’ll find a dedicated tab for live betting. Once you find the game, just click through for real-time updates. When an appealing opportunity comes up or there’s a momentum shift, you’ll be all set to take advantage.

How does the NCAAB schedule work?

At the top level of college hoops in the U.S., there are 350+ teams competing each season. The regular season typically begins in November. From then until the new year, there are lots of random tournaments and inter-conference matchups.

When the calendar turns to January, conference play begins to heat up. Betting volume for NCAAB starts to ramp up as well, as this is when the NFL season is winding down and the CFL and NCAAF seasons are in the books.

Once the regular season is over in the late-February to early March window, there are conference tournaments to crown a champion. Beyond the chance to prove they are best in their league, the winner could land an automatic invite to March Madness. The NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament takes place over the final three weeks of March. It’s a single-elimination tournament with the national champion crowned at the end of March or early April.

All told, the season lasts about five months, and you’ll have tons of games to choose from along the way. You can wait for “The Dance” if you’d like, but there’s a lot to be said for getting involved early and being even more prepared once March Madness is set to tip off.

Betting on March Madness

March Madness is the common nickname used for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The madness comes from what is typically a pretty wild ride. Obviously, the tourney begins in March.

As mentioned, conference tournament winners receive automatic invites. That takes up 32 of the 68 teams in the field, while the other 36 are considered to be at-large berths. The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee is tasked with setting the field.

The goal is to pick the most deserving non-conference winners, but there will inevitably be deserving programs that get left out. The full list of participants is unveiled on what has come to be known as Selection Sunday. The last eight qualifiers play in the First Four matchups with the winners advancing to play in the rest of the tournament. It’s broken down into geographic quadrants with 16 teams in each: East, South, Midwest and West.

The teams are seeded 1 through 16. It’s a single-elimination tournament, which means that winners advance and losers go home. For each round of the tourney, there are a set number of games.

  • First Four: 4
  • First round: 32
  • Second round: 16
  • Sweet Sixteen: 8
  • Elite Eight: 4
  • Final Four: 2
  • National Championship: 1

It’s 67 games from start to finish. You can bet on each game individually at the legal online sportsbooks if you’d like and even take some shots with parlays as the tournament plays out. There’s also plenty to be said for taking a selective approach and placing wagers only when you find the optimal plays.

Last but not least, the terms March Madness and “brackets” are somewhat joined at the hip. There are plenty of bracket contests to be found in which participants have to project out the entire tournament, with the best-scoring brackets winning. You’ll find free and paid bracket contests online. Be sure to check out our page dedicated to March Madness odds and promos.

Best NCAAB bets for beginners

If you have experience with betting on the NBA or other types of basketball, then you should be able to get up to speed with NCAAB pretty quickly. That said, there are some nuances to consider. The college game is shorter than its pro counterpart, and the amateurs play less often. That’s twice per week in the season.

Any knowledge that you bring to the table can certainly help, but it’s not a lost cause if you’re starting from scratch. Take the time to learn all that you can while studying the various ways to bet. Zero in on a wager type or two that you like best and put into practice what you’ve learned. Here are three more tips that could be difference-makers.

  • Stick to what matters: Just like any other sport, there are tons of stats and metrics to consider when betting on NCAAB. Getting lost down the rabbit hole of numbers can be really easy as a result. Do your best not to make that mistake. For stats, stick to what really moves the needle: shooting percentage, defensive efficiency, depth of rotation, etc. On metrics, look toward trends that are real and not just great talking points.
  • Take a selective approach: During the regular season, there are days absolutely packed with games. Once the tournament starts, there are lots of different matchups to consider. Trying to research every game can translate into lots of head pain. Instead, pick your spots. For example, you can focus on specific conferences or marquee games during the season and then kick it up a notch once March Madness rolls around.
  • Don’t reach for upsets: During both the regular season and March Madness, there are plenty of matchups between larger programs and smaller schools. While everyone likes to be the genius who makes the upset call, don’t try to make something out of nothing. If your research makes a legitimate case for the upset, then certainly listen. When it doesn’t, lean to the side of the most likely outcome.

Betting on NCAAB can be highly entertaining and profitable if the balls bounce your way. It’s a sport for which bettors can find edges—if they take the time to put in the work, that is. For those who do so, long-term profitability is an achievable goal. Of course, there’s plenty of fun to be had all along the way.

Which NCAAB teams have won the most titles?

Just like in any other sport, there are certain regular title contenders. Here’s how the current leaderboard stacks up in terms of titles won.

  • 11 – UCLA
  • 8 – Kentucky
  • 6 – North Carolina
  • 5 – Duke, Indiana
  • 4 – Connecticut
  • 3 – Kansas, Villanova
  • 2 – Louisville, Cincinnati, Florida, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Oklahoma State, San Francisco

Beyond the individual schools, we can take things a little deeper. Certain conferences have produced more National Champions than others. Here’s the current list of conferences with three or more titles.

  • 15 – Atlantic Coast Conference, Pacific 12
  • 11 – Southeastern Conference
  • 10 – Big Ten Conference
  • 8 – Big East Conference
  • 6 – Independents
  • 4 – Missouri Valley Conference

So where are the winning schools most likely to be located? Once again, some clear trends have emerged through the years. Here are the states with the most National Champions.

  • 15 – California
  • 13 – North Carolina
  • 10 – Kentucky
  • 5 – Indiana
  • 4 – Connecticut, Pennsylvania
  • 3 – Ohio, Kansas, Michigan
  • 2 – Oklahoma, Wisconsin, New York, Florida, Texas

When looking at the latest futures market odds for the next champion, make note of the favourite teams with strong pedigrees and those from conferences that tend to produce a lot of winners. While there’s no guarantee they’ll win, there’s a good chance they’ll have a realistic shot at making some noise in March Madness.
